AFCON every two years? CAF considers reversing its reform, says Motsepe
In December 2025 CAF announced a four-year AFCON cycle from 2028. In Cape Verde, Patrice Motsepe raised a return to two years. No decision has been taken yet.
On 9 October 2026, at CAF's strategic conference in Cape Verde, president Patrice Motsepe said several scenarios were being studied, including keeping the AFCON every two years. On 20 December 2025 in Rabat, CAF had announced a four-year cycle from 2028 (editions in 2027 and 2028, then 2032).
The question still has to go before CAF's Executive Committee: no official decision has been announced. A biennial AFCON means more tournaments for national teams but more clashes with the European club calendar, and changes CAF's commercial contracts. We will update this article when a decision is published.
